TORI

Hello, my name is Tori, and I am a WODaholic (WOD= Workout Of the Day). They say you have to admit that this is your fault, and that you have to take responsibility for your actions, but I blame Elisa and Damon at CrossFit 19 North. Since they have been my suppliers for both WODs and food, I have lost 20 pounds, 6% of my body fat, and gained about 4% in muscle mass according to this crazy scale that measures all of that. I have also lost 3 full clothes sizes. Almost 4!!! You know that rumor you hear about CrossFit being expensive? Well, it isn’t your box membership that gets you – it is the cost of buying new clothes every month because you keep losing weight. About 4 months ago, just before I came to CF19N, I was unhappily going to the gym almost daily, trying to drop all the baby weight – a pound a week was average, and healthy according to my doctor, but I still looked and felt thick. Like many people, I grew to HATE the gym. I skipped the cardio machines because I already knew how boring those were, instead choosing to lift weights with the hubby, but it was so tediously repetitious. CrossFit is anything but boring. Damon and Elisa work hard to make you work hard! The workouts offer enough variety that you don’t get a chance to get bored. One day it is 300 meter sprints with squats and pushups, the next it is wallballs, box jumps, and pull-ups. And don’t talk yourself out of coming because you cannot do pull-ups – everything is scalable. You can use an elastic band to help you or even do jump-ups. The trainers at CF19N will help you determine what will work best for you. And did I mention the community? Everyone there is super friendly. Someone will always help you learn how to do a move, they will cheer for you while you push through your WOD, and you will make new friends! Our community rocks! Not only has my body undergone a transformation, but so has my mind. My goal was to weigh 150 lbs – I thought this was my ideal weight after having two babies. This number really means nothing to me anymore. Now my goals are fitness related. I want to lift more weight – I want to decrease my WOD times – I am competing against myself to beat my previous weights and times! Elisa and Damon are helping me do just that!

3.5 Months at CrossFit 19 North

On July 1st, 2015 I decided to make a commitment to my health. The choice I made was to try my best to stick to doing CrossFit for a month. A friend of mine named Joey had been doing CrossFit for a while, with tons of success, so I figured it would not hurt to give it a shot.  Man was I wrong. It hurt like hell! It was that good hurt. It was the type of hurt that reminds you that you are capable of anything.

I’ll never forget the moment when I decided that I would give CrossFit a shot. I was sitting in my office and Tori (Joey’s wife) had just walked in from her workout at CrossFit 19 North across the street. I was talking about how I was going to dedicate myself to lifting weights and walking on the treadmill at home. She looked at me with this intense look that only she has and said to just do CrossFit and suck it up. So I did. That was three and half months ago. I’ll get the typical “numbers” out of the way now. I began at 361 lbs. I’m down 60 lbs in three and a half months. While that’s great, I’m more amazed with how strong I feel. I’ve also noticed how much muscle I’m gaining. In the past I’ve been below 300 lbs but not able to wear a 2X size shirt. Now, I’m over 300lbs and am comfortably in a 2X shirt. The same goes with my pants and shorts.  People are amazed whenever I tell them how much I weigh. They expect me to weigh less, since according to them I look “skinnier”. It’s funny really seeing their reaction but I know what they mean. When I started this journey I took a before photo and every month I take an in-progress photo. The difference is uncanny.

Like many, when I first heard of CrossFit I was intimidated. I didn’t want to “get hurt”. I actually tried CrossFit a few years ago and on my third class ended up pulling a muscle in my abdomen. That was my excuse to quit back then. What do you expect when you’re busting your butt and testing your body like CrossFit tests your body?! Of course you’ll get some aches, pains, calluses, and bruises. The issue I’ve seen is when someone is not using proper form or if they are not scaling appropriately or they don’t listen to their body. The owner of CrossFit 19 North, Elisa, makes sure to teach newbs like me all of the necessary movements. She has always taken time to show myself and others what is correct and what is not. Any time I’ve had a question about a workout, she’s been there to answer questions, help me scale down my WODs, and give me tips on my form. The coaches and members at CF19 also help out with form and any questions I’ve had.

It’s been a great experience so far. CrossFit is hard. It will challenge you. It definitely has challenged me. The results speak for themselves. In the past I’ve yo-yo’d in weight from 280 lbs to 380 lbs. I think that in the past 8 years I’ve probably lost over 500 lbs cumulatively. The difference with CF is that I don’t have to think as much. I just walk-in, warm up and do my work out. I’ve beenable to actually stick to this for more than a month. I typically lose interest after a month, but I have no desire to stop! All of the excuses are left at the door.
